THB (฿)
Thai baht
Current regime
Trading the THB between market participants and across borders is not unrestricted and convertibility is limited. The market price is managed by the central bank to reduce volatility.
The payment processing of this currency is considered to be relatively standardised.
History
The Thai baht has been in use since perhaps the 13th century, and like the pound was originally a literal reference to a measured mass of silver.
The modern THB was introduced in 1897 when the previous system was decimalised.
The THB was allowed to float in a managed way from 2 July 1997 as a result of the Asian financial crisis.
The THB accounted for 0.5% of global FX turnover in April 2019.
